LAHAINA STORE LEDGER, 1846-1850. 1 volume in 1 folder.

The Lahaina Store ledger (John Halstead) dates from January 1, 1846 to April 30, 1850. The first entry in the ledger concerns Kamehameha III.

The volume was used to record information about the store, with later pages used for different purposes at different dates, including: the store(?) inventory and shipment of merchandise from H. Hackfeld & Co.

Also included as part of AR 73 is an article by Inez Ashdown about the Koa House,built in the late 1840s or early 1850s by whaling ship captain John Joseph Halstead; and notes compiled from the ledger in 1985 by Frank Nitchie.]

WAIHEE SURVEYS, ca. 1900. 1 volume in 1 folder.

This volume contains metes and bounds land surveys of lots awarded by the Land Commission in Waihee, Maui, with sketches. Most of these surveys are written in Hawaiian. Arranged by land owners, the surveys also list claim and apana numbers, and acreage. The surveys were filed with James N.K. Keola, Clerk, on January 19, 1900.

WAILUKU SUGAR COMPANY. LAND RECORDS, 1877-1878. 2 volumes in 2 folders.

The two nearly-identical volumes in this small collection are Notes of Lands of Wailuku Sugar Company, 1877-October 1878. They include descriptions of lands in possession of the company, August 31, 1877, also with metes and bounds descriptions, lists of Royal Patents and deeds, names, and dates. There also is an index.

ALEXANDER HOUSE SETTLEMENT ASSOCIATION. MINUTE BOOK, 1916-1921. 1 volume in 1 folder.

On July 10, 1916, the Maui Aid Association formed a separate organization, the Alexander House Settlement Association, to carry on the work of the existing Alexander House Settlement Association. The latter had been established in 1901 by Emily Alexander Baldwin as a memorial to her parents, William Patterson Alexander and Mary Ann McKinney Alexander, missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Among its activities and purposes were the uplift of community life, philanthropic endeavor, instruction of various kinds, promotion of the use of the gymnasium, establishment of outdoor playgrounds and/or summer camps, and improving the general welfare of all classes of people. Membership was open to all adults.

The minute book records minutes of regular and special meetings of the Board of Trustees through December 20, 1921. Also included in the volume are copies of the Charter of Incorporation and By-Laws, minutes of some committees, letters, and reports of Alexander House Settlement operation.

AIKEN, HELEN C. GUEST BOOKS, 1906-1929. 4 volumes (2 volumes are in 2 folders).

Two guest books of Helen C. Aiken and her family comprise a record of guests, flowers, and menus from their life at the family home "Puuomalei." The two books date from December 15, 1906 to December 30, 1917, with guest signatures and an occasional photograph, and from January 1914 to January 18, 1915, recording menus for lunches and dinners, and decorations. The latter volume also contains examples of small decorations used while entertaining.

Two additional volumes document guests and activities at "Idlewilde." One volume, identified as the third guest book created since ownership of Idlewilde by the Aiken family in 1906, dates from December 31, 1912 to May 23, 1921, while the second volume dates from August 5, 1921 to November 15, 1929. In both volumes are signatures of guests, with their anecdotes, recollections, poems, and other writings, with photographs. The books also serve as a brief family diary of events and activities. Included are some photographs, most notably, trips to Haleakala in 1915, 1917, and 1918; groups of people on the lanai of Idlewilde, 1917; a party on horseback in 1918; soldiers in uniform; and scenery.

These records present an interesting perspective on the life of the well-to-do and their visitors on Maui during this period.

WARD, ROSE HAAHEO. SCRAPBOOK, 1899. 1 volume in 1 folder.

Rose Haaheo Ward's lauhala-covered scrapbook contains personal letters, poems, prayers, and greetings to her, May-July 1899, written (and probably presented) by her students at Maunaolu Seminary. The letters have been pasted into the scrapbook. Also included is a loose two-page letter, dated September 9, 1898, from Ward at Maunaolu Seminary to "Dear People."

JAGGAR, RT. REV. BISHOP THOMAS AUGUSTUS.
LETTER, 1882 AND NOTE, post-1950. 1 folder.

This small collection contains a letter dated March 22, 1882, from Frances M. Hill to Bishop Jaggar, describing a gift of a piece of lace known as a "tidy." Frances Hill presented the tidy to Bishop Jaggar as a memento of his visit to the Church's mission in Athens in 1882. It was made by pupils in the mission school prior to 1871, and presented to Hill on her golden wedding anniversary. Also included in the collection is a note, post-1950, by Isabel P. Jaggar regarding her discovery of the tidy and the 1882 letter in a trunk at Kelpie Lodge, Smith's Cove, Nova Scotia, in May 1950.

The tidy is also held by the Maui Historical Society.

This small collection contains a letter written by W.H Bailey, Jr. on letterhead of Olinda Land Company, Los Angeles, California, September 29, 1922, to his uncle, C.A. Bailey, Los Gatos, California, notifying the latter of the death of Dick Kahaulelio. Encapsulated with the letter is a small oil painting on cardboard of flowers and a bee, by Kahaulelio.

MISCELLANEOUS DOCUMENTS, 1906-1907. 1 folder.

Included in this collection are a handwritten document in Hawaiian, dated September 3, 1906, authorizing Napua to act as commissioner and agent for the book "Kaluaikoolau," by Kahikina Kelekona, the owner of the book, and an English translation of the authorization.

Also in this collection is a letter, April 12, 1907, to Napua from Joseph Kamainalulu, concerning stamps for 13 books.

Fragments of two letters by Dickey(?). Included are an original letter (laminated) written from Sunny Side, dated February 15, 1880, concerning his activities, and accompanied by a partial transcription. There also are fragments of a letter written from Haiku. Both letters are in poor condition and have suffered losses.


The collection also includes an undated 4" x 5" black and white photograph of an unidentified woman, taken in Truro, Nova Scotia.

ALEMEIDA, LILY. WRITINGS, n.d. 1 folder.

Mrs. Alemeida's undated writings are comprised of handwritten legends about Maui, written in pencil, in Hawaiian, on the verso of several pages of galley-like strips of Ka Nupepa..., Honolulu. The pages are very acidic and fragile. There also is a Hawaiian transcription and English translation of a small portion of the writings.

Mrs. Alameida was a school teacher who was married to a General Alemeida of the Hawaii National Guard.

This collection is comprised of 5" x 7" near-print index cards with typed information on various topics of Hawaiian history and culture. Included are the following:

Folder 2 - Data Cards, H-M (implements, land ownership, makahiki, medicine, musical instruments)

Folder 3 - Data Cards, N-Z (petroglyphs, plants, religion)

The exact use or purpose of the cards is unclear, but they are color-coded and appear to be educational aids.

"AHA PAPA HIMEUI [sic] O HAWAII." BOOKLET, 1995. 1 folder.

This booklet of "Himeni" (misprinted as "Himeui") or hymns, also contains a history of local churches and choirs. It was prepared for the 7th Annual Hawaiian Choir Retreat, Pa'ia Hawaiian Protestant Church, July 28-30, 1995. It is 36 pages long, and in Hawaiian and English.

The William Ross Aiken Papers include two copies of "The Sunny Era of Hawaiian Music: A Study of Early 20th Century Hawaiian Music," written by Aiken for the Maui Historical Society, 1996; and two photocopies of "Johnny Noble and His Hawaiians," vol. 1, Brunswick (record) Album Contents and Notes About Hawaiian Music, by Don Blanding, copyright 1944.

William Ross Aiken was born in Puunene in 1919. Additional biographical and family information is available in the paper he authored, which also lists Hawaiian singers and musicians, composers, records (especially Brunswick Records), and historical phonograph records.

CLEMENS, SAMUEL. LETTER, 1866. 2 items in 1 folder.

In this letter addressed to "Messrs Kimball," written at Wailuku Plantation, April 26, 1866, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) asks that the recipients wait for him to travel to Haleakala/Haiku with them. Clemens asks for some prior notice so he can arrive with his horse, and includes a humorous description of his horse ("his strong suit is grace and personal comeliness, rather than velocity"). Clemens notes that he sent this original letter and two or three copies to ensure safe delivery of his letter.

Research use of a photocopy of the 1866 Clemens letter is suggested.

Also included in this collection is a May 3, 1975 letter of Rodney C. Eaton concerning the discovery of the Clemens letter in the papers of his grandfather, Rodney G. Kimball, professor of applied mathematics, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Eaton donated the Clemens letter to Maui Historical Society.

Included in this small collection are two stamped covers (stamped envelopes, stamps unused), postmarked Kahului, October 3, 1974. The envelopes bear the imprint of the County Fair. One has a 10 cent Rural America stamp, while the other has a block of four 10 cent Horse Racing stamps.

LEEBRICK, KARL C. WRITING, 1920. 1 folder.

Leebrick's manuscript is entitled "Karl's First View of the Volcano, 1920," written in Hilo, beginning ca. December 19, 1920, and describing his trip to the Island of Hawaii from Honolulu and his activities at Christmas. The manuscript is 16 pages, typewritten, annotated, and signed by Leebrick.

In 1952, Leebrick became president of Maunaolu College on Maui.

WAILUKU SUGAR COMPANY.
LABOR CONTRACT, 1880. 1 item in 1 folder.

This small collection consists of a printed labor contract for the services of Jose Castillia, dated January 15, 1880. Castillia's services were secured for the period of 24 months, beginning January 17, 1880, including 26 days of labor per month, eleven hours per day. The Company agreed to pay him $18 per month for his work. The printed contract was in English and Hawaiian; only the English portion of this document was completed. Two revenue stamps are affixed to the contract.

The Mary D. Alexander Smith Papers include nine items of family papers and maps of the Lahaina and Baldwin House and Mission Premises, 1919-1960, with Mrs. Smith's letter of May 4, 1984 to Virginia Wirtz, Maui Historical Society, describing her donation. Included are:

(1) Typewritten letter, February 9, 1935, from Clarence A. Brown, Pioneer Mill, to Arthur C. Alexander (father of Mary D. Alexander Smith), then with the Land Department, American Factors, re: their search for foundation stones and other marks to assist in relocating the Seamen's Chapel and adobe building on the Baldwin House grounds.

(2) Plan of the mission premises, Lahaina, showing Main and Chapel Streets, referred to in Brown's letter of February 9, 1935.

(3) Handdrawn plan of the mission premises, Lahaina, 1935, with additions in red ink. >

(4) Letter, March 7, 1935, from Erdmann Baldwin, Paia to Arthur Chambers Alexander, regarding the plan of the Baldwin premises and additions noted in red. The letter also bears a later note by another person identifying Baldwin and Alexander.

(5) Typescript draft entitled "The Story of the Mission Premises at Lahaina," written in January 1935, with annotations, by Mary Charlotte Alexander (aunt of Mary D. Alexander Smith).

(6) Three undated pages of reminiscences about Dr. Dwight Baldwin, numbered 10, 11, and 12, unsigned, but probably by Mary C. Alexander.

BALDWIN, ERDMANN.
NOTES ON VOLCANOES, 1906-1908. 1 folder.

Baldwin's handwritten notes on volcanoes consist of excerpts from Life in Hawaii, by Rev. Titus Coan and from Narrative of a Tour Through Hawaii and Owhyhee, by William Ellis. Also included is a letter to Prof. C.H. Hitchcock, Hanover, NH, written from Holualoa, Kona, February 11, 1908, and concerning Baldwin's move to Hilo, the illness and surgery of his little son, his observations of volcanic eruptions, especially on the lands at Kapapala; and his ideas about past eruptions and lava flows.

There is also a description of an eruption and volcanic activity in Halemaumau crater, December 2, 1906 (recorded December 29, 1906), which might have been drawn from Volcano House records rather than first-hand observations; and notes on activity at Halemaumau since December 29, 1906. Concerning the latter, Baldwin was at Halemaumau on January 21 and 28, 1907, immediately after the cessation of the Kahuku lava flow from Mauna Loa, and after activity from Kilauea had recommenced on January 20. Baldwin's notes include calculations of the distances of the flows and personal observations on various dates. Other notes were gathered from the Volcano House record books, compiled in September 1906 concerning volcanic activity and observations from July 14, 1888 through July 31, 1905, and from December 29, 1906 through July 4, 1908, with sketches.

This small collection consists of a letter of transmittal (partial, pages 2 and 3 only) dated April 9, 1938, regarding new plantation maps, with a listing of the maps, and an envelope addressed to the company from R.M. Towill. There are photocopies of both the partial letter and envelope.

Also included are an undated land record book, with entries likely arranged by field or property number, recording deeds, metes and bounds descriptions, and ownership of land. A few loose records were removed from the land record book and filed separately; these include leases, lists of lots sold and Crown lands leased, a few notes, and related items.

This collection consists of biographical information on Brother Bertram, a Marianist (member of the Society of Mary) who lived on Maui with other brothers at what is now St. Anthony's Junior-Senior High School, and a letter concerning Brother Bertram photographs, sent to the director of the Maui Historical Society, September 25, 1986, by Br. Lawrence Scriviani, SM, Marianist Archives, Cupertino, California.

This volume is labeled "Description of Prisoners Received at County Jail, Wailuku," and includes records from March 25, 1940-September 2, 1942. Listed for each prisoner are the date of reception, conv. (conviction?) book report number, name, number, sex, hair color, eye color, height, weight, age, marital status, birth place, occupation, offense, location of sentencing, sentence received, and general remarks (usually regarding any transfers, commitment, or release date). There also is an alphabetical name index.

For the period July 19, 1945 through May 1, 1946, the volume was used to record the activities of jail personnel in greater detail. Listed are names of officers on duty and the times of shift changes and other activities (e.g., bed checks performed, rounds, reporting for duty, and signing in and out).

AIKEN, W.O. SCRAPBOOK, 1897-1907. 1 volume.

One scrapbook volume with newsclippings about Maui, dating from January 16, 1897 through February 20, 1907, which were of interest to the Aiken family. Most of the clippings probably came from The Hawaiian Star newspaper. The volume is in good condition.

BETA SIGMA PHI. SCRAPBOOK, 1948-1951. 1 volume.

Bound in lauhala, this scrapbook contains newsclippings, notes, cards, and photographs, 1948-1951, about the Hawaii Theta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi women's sorority. The scrapbook documents the activities of members, including their service and social events, including engagement and wedding announcements, beginning with the formation of the chapter.

The Hawaii Theta chapter of the sorority, the eighth chapter in Hawaii, was organized on Maui on August 23, 1948, to unite young women in fellowship and friendship, and for social and cultural activity. Twelve charter members pledged the sorority in a ceremony at the Maui Grand Hotel. Other historical information may be found in the scrapbook.

WAILUKU FOREIGN CHURCH. SUBSCRIPTION RECORD, 1878-1879. 1 folder.

Two pages of color photocopies comprise a portion of the subscription record of the Wailuku Foreign Church. Included are an April 1878 subscription for the pastor, and funds paid in November 1879 to bring over the minister (from ?).

GLASER, LEWIS H. (1917-1972). BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION. 1 folder.

Lewis H. Glaser, the founder of Revell, Inc., was born April 27, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY and died September 12, 1972 in Los Angeles. Included in the collection are a variety of articles and biographical information about Glaser and his company, which manufactured plastic model kits and other products for children of all ages.

Mr. Glaser's widow, Royle [Freund], and daughters Kim Glaser Selbert and Leslie Glaser Kanner, contributed funds to Maui Historical Society to complete renovation of the Bailey Gallery.

The Wailuku District Relief Committee was formed by the County of Maui Board of Supervisors on January 21, 1916, to provide assistance to residents after devastating storms and flooding on January 18, 1916. In the early morning hours of January 18, 1916, a heavy rainstorm caused the 'Iao Stream to flood, sweeping away homes without warning and resulting in several deaths.

The Committee was organized to receive contributions, locate housing and shelter, and provide food and clothing for those affected by the storms. Committee members divided the work by ethnic group, reporting on conditions as well as relief provided.

The Minute Book dates from January 21-May 23, 1916, during which time the Committee was very active, providing detailed minutes and reports of activities. Financial records also are included, with a final financial statement dated July 1, 1916.

KWON, MITSUGI HAMADA. MEMOIR, ca. 1990-1991.

Mrs. Kwon's near-print memoirs, "Maui - Paradise of the Pacific," edited by Linda Jo Kwon, describe her life and family, with instructions for recipes, songs, poems, dances, and crafts. Mrs. Kwon, a Japanese-American, grew up in Haiku.
