Finding Aid to the

MAUI WOMAN'S CLUB

RECORDS, 1919-1985

AR 2

4 linear feet (10 boxes).

Abstract

Records of an organization of women formed in 1919 on the Island of Maui to promote Americanism and the interests of the local community. In 1925 the Maui Woman's Club affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Through its history, Maui Woman's Club has participated in a variety of cultural, historical, charitable, and community service activities. Of particular interest have been programs to assist local hospitals, the hard of hearing, students, and establishment of an animal pound (humane society) on Maui.

Beginning in 1951, Maui Woman's Club initiated efforts to establish a local historical organization, which led ultimately to the formation of the Maui Historical Society in 1956. Researchers may also find to be of interest the Maui Woman's Club files and references in the records of the Maui Historical Society. The MHS Executive Director should be contacted for more information about the Historical Society records.

The records of the Maui Woman's Club include: a Historical Sketch and Related Records, Constitution and By-Laws, and Minutes of Meetings and Related Records, which comprise the basic organizational records of the Club, followed by series entitled Awards and Certificates, Correspondence, Financial Records, Membership Records, Miscellaneous, Newsletters, Programs and Projects Files, Scrapbooks, Yearbooks, and Photographs. Also included are a group of historical papers written by and presented to the Club. The most voluminous and informative of the series are the minutes, yearbooks, scrapbooks (which have been photocopied for preservation) and photographs.

Gift of the Maui Woman's Club via Louise W. (Mrs. William O.) Smith, Kula, Maui, Hawaii, 1995; and of Sherrille M. Allen, Kihei, HI, 1996. Accession number 95-5-365, catalogue number 07618; 1997.011.001-.002.

History

The Maui Woman's Club was formed by a group of interested local women at a "preliminary" meeting held September 29, 1919, at the home of Mrs. S.A. Baldwin. A visiting Californian, Sarah K. Watkins, spoke on the advantages of women's clubs and was selected temporary president. Mary Couch was selected as secretary. At the October 15, 1919 meeting to organize the Club formally, choose the name, and elect officers, Mrs. H.A. Baldwin was selected the first president of the Club. A committee was appointed to draft a constitution.

Charter members signed the roll on November 3, 1919. Two weeks later the by-laws were adopted. Membership was open to any woman who was a resident of the County of Maui. First year membership numbered 128 women.

The Club's constitution and by-laws listed the following objects: "First - To promote Americanism, and second, to take up any line of work which will promote the highest interests of the community."

The officers of the Maui Woman's Club were a president, vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, treasurer and auditor, each elected at the annual meeting held the first Monday in June. The Club's Board of Directors, composed of the officers and committee and department heads, selected an advisory board (originally all men) to advise the Club.

The Club's first committees were Membership, Book and Library, Press, Program, Historical, Legislative, and Entertainment, supplemented in later years by the Community Service, Courtesy, Ways and Means, General Federation, Home Economics, International Relations, Music, and Study Committees. The work of most of the committees is self-evident.

The Program and Press Committees planned for one or more papers on popular subjects to be given at each meeting, edited the yearbook, and published announcements and club reports. The Historical Committee "secure[d] and preserve[d] such data or objects of interest as may be of permanent value," and kept the Club's scrapbooks.

Separate departments were formed, including Civic Improvement, Educational, Household Economics, House, Music, and Study. Among the duties of the Educational Department was to promote Americanism and the better use of the English language. The House Department arranged Club meetings and maintained Club properties and furnishings. Later departments included the Better Hearing and Scholarship Departments, as listed in the 1957 revised constitution.

In 1925, the Maui Woman's Club affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The Club was incorporated in 1971.

The Maui Woman's Club has held six or seven lectures and a number of musical programs each year at regular monthly membership meetings. Speakers have included individuals from the University of Hawaii, the Mainland, and returning travelers. Other activities were annual luncheons, fashion shows, educational programs for members, sponsorship of dramatic and theatrical presentations, and in recent years, a Christmas Bazaar. Members of the Maui Woman's Club and of other local service organizations made and sold craft items at the annual Christmas Bazaar and provided public information about their programs.

Maui Woman's Club's charitable and community projects include and have included the following:

  • Civic beautification and landscaping (led by the Outdoor Circle)
  • Clean-up campaigns
  • Sponsorship of legislation
  • Assistance to Maui hospitals and Kula Sanitorium
  • Medical treatment for children (particularly programs for the hard of hearing)
  • Creation of an animal pound / humane society on Maui
  • Home economics demonstrations and training
  • Scholarships for high school graduates
  • Sponsorship and support of the Maui County Library
  • Support and financial assistance to high schools, Red Cross, and the County Fair

Among the projects of the Historical Department of Maui Woman's Club was the establishment of the Maui Historical Society. In 1951, Club member Beatrice N. Savage helped initiate the efforts to establish a historical organization on Maui. After a two year hiatus from October 1952-October 1954, Mrs. Savage and the Historical Department of the Woman's Club worked to reestablish the Historical Society. Woman's Club members visited historical sites and worked with Hawaii Visitors' Bureau to erect markers at the important sites. There were discussions about the possibility of starting a museum and plans were made to clear and reconstruct the twin heiau of Halekii and Pihana Kalani. The Historical Society was reactivated February 23, 1956, by the Maui Woman's Club.

In recent years, the Maui Woman's Club has continued its charitable and civic work in many of the same areas of interest. A girls and young women's organization, Laulima, was sponsored and supported by the Woman's Club.

Researchers may also find of interest the Maui Woman's Club records and references in the records of the Maui Historical Society (call number AR 1). The MHS Executive Director should be contacted for more information on the availability and contents of the Maui Historical Society collection.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Maui Woman's Club have been arranged in 13 series: a Historical Sketch and Related Records, Constitution and By-Laws, and Minutes of Meetings and Related Records, which comprise the basic organizational records of the Club, followed by an alphabetical arrangement of series entitled Awards and Certificates, Correspondence, Financial Records, Membership Records, Miscellaneous, Newsletters, Programs and Projects Files, Scrapbooks, Yearbooks, and Photographs. Added as Box 10 are a group of Papers written by club members or others, on topics of local historical interest. Within each series, records are arranged in chronological order or in alphabetical order by file title, and chronologically thereunder.

The HISTORICAL SKETCH AND RELATED RECORDS include a typewritten sketch about the Woman's Club by Louise Boyum, 1945, and a typewritten sketch and special Maui News newspaper supplements commemorating the Club's golden anniversary in 1959.

The Woman's Club CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS consist of printed booklets of the documents as revised in March 1957, two undated proposed revisions, and a May 2, 1961 report of the Constitution Committee.

Included in the Maui Woman's Club MINUTES OF MEETINGS AND RELATED RECORDS are Minutes of Board, occasional Executive Committee, and Regular membership meetings, both in bound volumes and filed as loose sheets in folders. Minutes are generally typewritten, with a few handwritten documents. Also included are occasional departmental and committee reports. A separate file contains a few scattered meeting programs and announcements mailed to members.

Minutes of Board, Executive Committee and Regular Meetings date from January 29, 1920-April 1, 1925 (loose in folder), August 9, 1928-April 17, 1973 (two bound volumes), May 15, 1973-December 7, 1976 (loose in folder), January 18, 1977-December 7, 1982 (loose in folder), and January 7, 1983-November 12, 1985 (loose in folder).

Minutes of Regular Meetings include minute books, September 29, 1919 to March 5, 1946 and October 2, 1945 to May 1, 1973. The earliest volume of minutes, September 29, 1919-May 23, 1939, contains the signatures of regular, associate, and honorary charter members, with later additions; the original constitution and by-laws; and object of the club. The 1939-1946 volume shows some water damage (mold and rust) caused by the April 1, 1946 tidal wave / tsunami.

A small file of AWARDS AND CERTIFICATES contains documents received from various community organizations. These documents originally were mounted in the Club's scrapbooks. Also included is a

County Council Resolution Recognizing "Women's History Week," March 6-12, 1983, presented by Mary Lou Farr, President.

CORRESPONDENCE, 1950-1978, includes miscellaneous items also removed from the scrapbooks. Most numerous are letters and excerpts of letters complimenting the Club's exhibit in the California Spring Garden Show in 1950.

FINANCIAL RECORDS consist of a folder of miscellaneous accounting notes and calculations, 1973-1981, concerning the Educational Loan Fund, savings account, sale of Unicef cards and calendars, arts and crafts sale, and Project FREE (Federation's Role in our Enterprise Economy), and a proposed budget. There are also annual and monthly treasurer's reports, 1960-1983, which illustrate the Club's financial status and earnings from activities and projects.

MEMBERSHIP RECORDS are comprised of a membership book, 1982-1984, listing members, addresses, and dues paid.

One folder of MISCELLANEOUS items contains two blank application forms, a brochure and press release about the Eddie Tam Memorial Fund Coronary Care Unit (for which the Woman's Club raised funds); a list of Club officers and members, 1973-1974; a clipping about Project FREE to teach students about the free enterprise system; a Hawaii Literacy, Inc. brochure and clipping; and a clipping showing new medical equipment purchased with assistance from the Maui Woman's Club.

A nearly complete run of Maui Woman's Club NEWSLETTERS date from January 1975-August 1981. These single-sheet newsletters were typewritten, then stencilled or photocopied. They provide information on upcoming meetings and projects such as the annual Christmas Bazaar.

Following the Newsletters are records about specific Club PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS FILES. These records are filed alphabetically by title of program or project, with papers arranged chronologically thereunder.

A single program of an Annual Club Luncheon, June 4, 1966, is present. (Photographs of this and many other Luncheons are filed separately.)

The Club's major fund-raising project in recent years has been the annual Christmas Bazaar. Club members, community groups, and churches provided crafts and handmade items for the annual sale, usually held in November. Records of the Bazaar include applications, mailing lists, rules, and layouts of the booths in the exhibit hall, 1974-1981, 1983-1984, n.d.; and bazaar books, 1973 and 1974, listing meeting minutes and notes. There also are clippings and financial records, including bank statements, cancelled checks, and deposit slips, August 1979-May 1981 and financial reports and other financial records, 1974-1980.

In September 1967, the Maui Woman's Club sponsored the premiere of the film Doctor Zhivago at Iao Theatre, to benefit the Eddie Tam Memorial Fund. Present in the collection are the program and tickets.

Two ribbons are also located in this series, representing the Club's accomplishments - the First Award at the 18th Annual California Spring Garden Show in 1950 and Second Place at the 50th Maui County Fair, 1972.

In 1978, the Woman's Club advertised and helped sponsor the Maui Community Theatre's production of South Pacific. The program is found in this collection.

Study Group Records include minutes of meetings, notes, and attendance or mailing lists, 1964-1968. Participants in the Study Group read and reviewed books and attended plays. Copies of several reviews are located in the files.

SCRAPBOOKS, 1920-1980 (with some gaps), of newspaper clippings, photographs, and yearbooks were created and kept by the Historical Committee. These volumes provide an interesting record of the activities of the Woman's Club. Many monthly meetings were announced and reported in detail in the Maui News, which is the source of most of the clippings.

The scrapbooks were photocopied for preservation and the newspaper clippings discarded. Most of the original materials (awards and certificates, letters, photographs, and yearbooks) were removed subsequent to photocopying and are filed with the records.

Also present is a nearly complete run of the Club's YEARBOOKS, 1920-1921 - 1939-1940, 1943-1944 - 1975-1976, and 1978-1980. The volume for 1972-1973 was called a Handbook. No yearbook was published during 1942 or 1943. The 1943-1944 volume contains the president's and treasurer's reports for 1941-1942 and brief descriptions of how the work of the Club was curtailed by World War II.

These small printed volumes contain the collect for clubwomen; lists of the officers, advisory board, committees and members, and chairs of departments; dates and descriptions of meetings and programs; the club's annual calendar; departmental activities and members; and roster of the membership. In later years, some or all of the yearbooks also contain the annual report of the president, treasurer's annual reports, a list of the Club's charter members, list of past presidents, the Club pledge, official flower, lists of accomplishments, some special reports, and the annual Club theme. Beginning with the 1962-1963 yearbook, advertisements appear in each volume.

Following the records are several files of black and white and color PHOTOGRAPHS, many removed from the scrapbooks after photocopying. Most of the photographs record general and committee meetings, luncheons and entertainment such as fashion shows, talks and presentations, garden club tours, and projects of the Woman's Club, such as the Christmas Bazaar, "adopted" (sponsored) children, assistance to hard of hearing students, and the like.

Most photographs are in fair to good condition. By far the best photographs, in terms of content, condition, and preservation, are the 5" x 7" and 8" x 10" black and white prints taken by professional photographers, although many of the recent candid shots also are very interesting. A few of the black and white (especially the Polaroids from the late 1960s) and most of the color prints, which were taken by amateur photographers during the 1960s and later, have faded. Some of the prints have adhered together, probably due to high heat and humidity, and a few bear the remnants of old identification labels; these have been left as is to avoid further damage to the images. All photographs (except those fused together) have been placed in Mylar sleeves for preservation.

The photographs are arranged in chronological order, separated by individual event or activity (e.g., meeting, luncheon, Christmas Bazaar). The quantity and dimensions of photographs in each folder have been listed. Many of the photographs have been identified by the photographer or a Club member or were identified by proximity to detailed newspaper articles in the scrapbooks. Others have been identified during this processing to the extent possible. Additional personal information, dates, and descriptions of events photographed may be located by reviewing the clippings in the scrapbooks, especially for those prints which were removed from the scrapbooks after photocopying.

Located in Box 10 are a group of original PAPERS, composed by club members or their friends and others, on topics of local historical interest. They probably were presented at Club meetings and may also have been sponsored or affiliated with the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. These papers are arranged in alphabetical order by author's last name or title (where no author is listed). They date from the late 1910s to mid 1960s.
