Abstract
Seventeen scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, and memorabilia, combined into an artificial collection, documenting Maui Historical Society, 1956-1973; the career of Circuit Court Judge and former County Supervisor Wendell F. Crockett; the activities of the Maui High School girls' S.E.C. Club, 1933-1951, and general Maui and Hawai'i historical and contemporary topics. Most clippings appeared in the Maui News or Honolulu newspapers and were photocopied onto acid-free paper for preservation. Photographs, letters, papers, and memorabilia have been filed separately.
MAUI HISTORICAL SOCIETY scrapbooks, 1956-1973, illustrate activities of its organizers and supporters, archaeological and historic preservation efforts, and fund-raising events. A number of clippings document the July 6, 1957 opening of Hale Hoikeike, the Historical Society's exhibit area. The Judge WENDELL F. CROCKETT scrapbooks, 1959-1963, document his career and rulings from the bench, with a few personal papers and photographs.
The GENERAL scrapbooks cover a variety of topics concerning Hawai'i or Maui history and legends. Included are scrapbooks prepared by Harriet M. Calmes, entitled "Flowers, Coffee, Fruit, Nuts, Plants, Trees" and "Luaus, Leis, Festivals, Sports," dating from about the 1920s. Of interest are early photographs of a celebration during King Kalakaua's reign; the funeral of Prince Kalanianaole, January 5, 1922; Kite Day at Mills, April 28, 1922; Easter Service on Punch Bowl, 1920s; hula dancers, preparations for a luau, a man with surfboard at Waikiki, and pa'u riders. A scrapbook about Maui Archaeology Expeditions, 1971-1973, concerns several trips to archaeological sites, heiaus, petroglyphs, and other areas.
A Scrapbook of Ledger Pages from Old Koa House, Kalepolepo, Kihei, where ships anchored to trade, consists of four pages of barely-legible photocopies of an original ledger from 1846-1847. Scrapbooks on Maui History, 1941-1946, focus on Emily Whitney Alexander Baldwin, W.D. Baldwin, Harry Alexander Baldwin, other long-time residents, and Maunaolu Seminary; life on the home front and World War II news; local history, sites, and buildings; Hawaiian crafts, folklore, and residents. Seminary articles detail the history of the school and its last commencement, June 1942. Home front and wartime clippings concern scrap drives, conservation, war bonds, local enlistments, and Maui soldiers.
The S.E.C. CLUB scrapbook, documents, and photographs illustrate the history of a Maui High School girls' service club from 1933-1951. Of particular interest are the photographs of club members, 1935-1941, providing an excellent visual record of many of Maui's young women. Group photographs depict girls in their initiation costumes and participating in various service projects and social events such as May Day and the May Queen, working at the County Fair booth, selling war stamps, and collecting mail for servicemen.

Biographical and Historical Sketches
Judge Wendell Francis (Frank) Crockett
Wendell F. (Frank) Crockett was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to Annie V. Ryder Crockett and William F. Crockett. He came to Maui with his family about 1902. His mother was a Maui public school teacher prior to her death at age 94.
Crockett graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1917. He returned to Maui to begin the practice of law, interrupted by military service in World War I. Upon his return to civilian life, Crockett joined the Maui County Attorney's Office in 1919, where he spent 30 years as a prosecutor, following in his father's footsteps. Crockett then entred private practice, spending 10 years as a defense attorney. In addition, he served in the Territorial Senate from 1951-1953, and joined the Hawaii National Guard. He was elected to the County Board of Supervisors as a Republican in November 1958.
In September 1959, Crockett was appointed judge of the Second Circuit Court by Governor William F. Quinn. He held this position until required to retire when he reached the age of 70 in October 1961. Subsequently, Crockett was elected to the County Board of Supervisors for a two-year term beginning in 1963.
Judge Crockett was married in 1926 to Myrtle Lau, a teacher at Wailuku Elementary School. Their children were William F. III, Wendell R., and Erminie (Gartley).

S.E.C. Club
The S.E.C. Club, or Service, Enthusiasm, and Courtesy Club, of Maui High School, was started in 1927, developing from the 10-2-9 Club after the latter was discontinued. Emma L. Cawdrey was the club's first advisor. The club's goals were "to promote better scholarship and good fellowship and to entertain students of this and other schools who participated in athletics." This latter aim was soon eliminated and club activities focused on scholarship and service and assistance to Maui High School. Service to the school involved raising funds which were used over the years to improve the girls' lavatory, principal's office, and auditorium, purchase curtains for the stage, build a tennis court and help construct the Physical Education building, initiate a music program through the purchase of musical instruments, install a public address system, help equip the dispensary, and other projects.
Club members were high school junior girls, selected for their character, scholarship, leadership, and participation in school activities. Members held fund-raising picnics, dances, and variety shows, served as school ushers, sold Christmas Seals (beginning in 1932), provided a Christmas box to a needy family, and staffed the high school booth at the County Fair (after 1933). During World War II, club members sold war bonds and stamps, sent and organized mail and Christmas cards sent to soldiers, and worked as nurses' aides. Membership was limited to 15 girls until 1935, 20 girls until 1937, and 25 girls beginning in 1937.

Scope and Content Note
Most of these SCRAPBOOKS were comprised mainly of newspaper clippings which were photocopied onto acid-free paper for preservation. Photographs, letters, other papers, and memorabilia were removed from the scrapbooks and have been filed separately. A few scrapbooks with greater interest as artifacts have been retained as they are.
Maui Historical Society Scrapbooks
The MAUI HISTORICAL SOCIETY scrapbooks, 1956-1973, illustrate the activities of the Historical Society and its organizers and supporters, as recorded in contemporary newspaper articles. The earliest of the scrapbooks document in detail the preparations for and ceremonies opening Hale Hoikeike ("House of Display"), the Historical Society's exhibit hall, on July 6, 1957 and the first anniversary of the opening. Other events well-documented in the clippings are historic preservation efforts such as visiting heiau, and cleaning historical sites and historic buildings; and fund-raising events such as the annual holoku fashion teas. Also included are a variety of columns from the Maui News, such as "Historical Society Briefs" (or "Notes"), "Country Chirps from a Westside Bird," and "About Things and People," by Edna E. Jenkins.
The photographs removed from the Maui Historical Society scrapbooks illustrate archaeological expeditions to Nuu and Kaupo with Dr. Kenneth P. Emory, 1956; work at Pihana Heiau, 1956; the opening of Hale Hoikeike; Bailey House, Historical Society exhibits at the County Fair, and a 1971 Garden Party.
Judge Wendell Francis (Frank) Crockett Scrapbooks
The Judge WENDELL F. CROCKETT scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, letters, photographs, and memorabilia documenting his career and cases handled as judge. Photographs, letters, and memorabilia were separated from the scrapbooks after the newspaper clippings were copied.
The scrapbooks date from 1959 to early 1963. One volume illustrates Judge Crockett's tenure on the bench, including his appointment, confirmation, rulings, and cases. Clippings in the volume dated 1959 to 1963 are largely undated; their original arrangement has been retained.
Included in separate files are a few letters, Crockett's instructions for attending a campaign speech by Richard M. Nixon in August 1960; a Naturalization Program, August 23, 1960, in which Judge Crockett participated; a program from the Maui YMCA Charter Night Dinner, October 3, 1960, with Judge Crockett giving the Aloha; a Maui Lions Club 25th anniversary program, November 19, 1960 (Crockett was a charter member of the Club, organized December 26, 1935), and a Lions Club Charter Monarch certificate.
The photographs show Crockett at his swearing in as a County Supervisor, January 1963, with his wife, sister(?), granddaughter(?), and grandson(?), and with others following the ceremony. One additional photograph depicts Seihei Okuyama and his mother celebrating their 60th and 88th birthdays in Japanese traditional fashion, November 1961.
General Scrapbooks
The GENERAL scrapbooks cover a variety of topics concerning Hawai'i or Maui history and legends. Most of the articles originally appeared in the Maui News or Honolulu newspapers. Arrangement is roughly chronological. The original order of the pages has not been changed, although the newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper for preservation and any original letters, papers, memorabilia, and photographs removed and filed separately.
Two scrapbooks prepared by HARRIET M. CALMES have been retained in their current format. A scrapbook entitled "Flowers, Coffee, Fruit, Nuts, Plants, Trees," with a tapa cover, includes reproductions of images taken from magazines and books, some photographs, and articles. The second scrapbook, called "Luaus, Leis, Festivals, Sports," contains photographs, reproductions from magazines, and a few articles on preparation of poi, taro; various festivals such as the Japanese Hina Matsuri or Feast of Dolls, Boy's Festival or Feast of the Flying Fish, and the first Christmas in Hawaii; games, surfing (including Duke Kahanamoku), and other sports.
A number of the photographs in the Calmes scrapbooks were loose or becoming loose from the scrapbook pages and have been filed separately. Of interest are early photographs depicting a celebration during King Kalakaua's reign; the funeral of Prince Kalanianaole, January 5, 1922; Kite Day at Mills, April 28, 1922; Founders' Day, and Easter Service on Punch Bowl, 1920s. A scrapbook about MAUI ARCHAEOLOGY EXPEDITIONS, 1971-1973, prepared by Charles DuBois(?), contains a number of color prints and negatives showing several trips to archaeological sites, heiaus, petroglyphs, and other areas. Most of the photographs are labeled and individuals identified. This scrapbook has been left intact.

A scrapbook about MAUI HISTORY, 1941-1946, focuses on the Baldwin family, in particular Emily Whitney Alexander ("Mother") Baldwin, W.D. Maunaolu Seminary articles detail the history of the school and its last commencement, June 1942, with photographs of some of the graduates and of the dignitaries present. Included are two articles from 1933 and a few later materials. Also included are photographs of Emily Baldwin in her lily garden, ca. June 1940 (possibly on the occasion of her 95th birthday), of her home "Maluhia," also ca. June 1940; and of May E. Nance, head (1919-1921) of the Department of Domestic Science, principal (1921-1934), Home Economics department (1934-1942) at Maunaolu Seminary.
A scrapbook about MAUI HISTORY, February 1942-May 1945, contains newspaper clippings describing life on the home front and war news of interest to Maui residents. News of the home front concerns such activities as scrap drives, conservation measures, and war bonds, while war news clippings focused on local enlistments and Maui soldiers. Pages are dated by month only, with no other citations. There generally are no clippings from the summer months.
A general scrapbook with both MAUI AND HAWAI'I HISTORY AND FOLKLORE as its focus, contains newspaper clippings from 1956-1957. Citations are absent from some clippings, but the Maui News and Honolulu newspapers are the likely sources. Included are articles by Barbara Lyons, and regular newspaper columns such as "I Remember," by Mary Elspeth Fleming and "About Things and People," by Edna E. Jenkins.
A scrapbook about MAUI HISTORY, November 1957-1989, contains similar materials. Newspaper clippings from Maui News and Honolulu newspapers concern Maui history and historical sites and buildings, and residents. There is a rough index of topics.
Two folders contain a scrapbook of newspaper clippings on general HAWAI'I AND MAUI HISTORY, dating from the mid to late 1940s through the 1950s, with greater emphasis on Hawai'i, rather than Maui history. Citations are absent from many clippings. A number of the articles are identical or similar to those in other Hawai'i and Maui history scrapbooks. Topics include those of general historical interest, legends, folklore, places, and sites. Articles were written by Paul Avery, E.H. Bryan, Jr., Barlow Hardy, Kapiikauinamoku, Barbara Lyons, and Barbara Prock. Also included are regular columns such as "I Remember," by Mary Elspeth Fleming and "About Things and People," by Edna E. Jenkins, primarily from the Maui News. The scrapbook is indexed by subject and page number (some pages in the late 60s are missing).
The HAWAI'I HISTORY AND LEGENDS scrapbook, September 1956-October 1957, contains newspaper articles on historical and folklore topics by various authors, among them Barbara Lyons, Barbara Prock, and E.H. Bryan, Jr. The earliest clippings are somewhat more of general interest than historical.
The collection also contains the original and a photocopy of a scrapbook entitled "Tapa: How to Make Samples; Lauhala: Story - Sample Pictures; Handicraft: Pottery; Feather Work." This scrapbook contains samples of tapa and lauhala, articles, and a photograph of woman weaving lauhala. It was kept intact as an interesting artifact.
S.E.C. Club Scrapbook
The S.E.C. Club scrapbook documents the history of a Maui High School girls' service club from October 1933-March 1951, through newspaper clippings, letters, and photographs. The clippings document the service and fund-raising activities of the club. The scrapbook is most complete for the years through the school years 1945-1946, with much less material after that date. Some of the photographs appear to have been mounted previously in another scrapbook.
In addition, there is a club constitution and drafts, prepared after 1937, and a booklet entitled "The History of Maui High School, 1913-1938," a supplement to "Maui Hi-Notes," February 28, 1938, containing a paragraph on the history of the Club. A few letters, notes, and miscellany, 1932-1951, have been removed from the scrapbook after photocopying and filed separately. Copies of all letters, notes, and miscellany may be found in the photocopied scrapbook.
Of particular interest are the photographs of club members, dating from 1935-1941. Individual photographs of members, officers, and the club advisor were taken at the start of most school years, providing an excellent visual record of many of Maui's young women. Group photographs depict girls in their initiation costumes and participating in various service projects. Social events such as May Day and the May Queen, working at the County Fair booth, selling war stamps, and collecting mail for servicemen, are also illustrated. Most of the individual photographs are dated and identified, although for two years, photographs were placed in the scrapbook without identifications.
