"Mapping of Hawaii" Exhibit and Program

"The Mapping of Hawaii," an exhibit that traces the history of the Hawaiian Islands through maps, will be on display at the Bailey House Museum from Oct. 1 to 16.

"The Mapping of Hawaii" exhibit was created and interpreted by Bryant Neal and Richard Mickelsen and displays dozens of large-scale reproductions of historic maps and prints. The event tells how Hawaii found its place on the map and offers a story of discovery, adventure and conflict. The display begins with the Polynesian migrations and continues with maps from the European voyages of exploration, Kingdom of Hawaii, and the missionary and plantation days. The exhibit also includes more modern-era Hawaii maps from the Territorial period to the present. In addition to the maps and prints, there will be a special exhibit by the museum's Canoe House with illustrations of the history of Polynesian voyaging canoes.

There also are two other events tied to the traveling exhibit - on Oct. 7 at First Friday Wailuku from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m., where the exhibit will be open for free, and Oct. 8 with speaker Riley Moffat at 4 p.m., an authority on Hawaiian maps, speaking on the mapping of Maui from 1778 to 1929 at the Bailey House. The event is open to the public and is free to Maui Historical Society members; there is a $10 admission charge for nonmembers. The fee also includes admission to the museum and the mapping exhibit.

Those who have vintage or antique maps of Hawaii or other items on paper that may be of possible historic interest may bring them for a free evaluation by Moffat, museum staff and others with expertise.

The exhibit is a collaborative effort between the Maui Historical Society and Gallery Oceanica.

Book Signing and Celebration

for Edward Bailey of Maui: Teacher & Naturalist, Engineer & Artist

By Linda McCullough Decker

Bailey House Museum

Tuesday March 15, 2011

5:00pm to 7:00pm

Who was Edward Bailey (1814-1903)? His connection to Bailey House Museum is probably all you know about him. That’s because Maui author Linda Decker just published the very first Bailey biography, Edward Bailey of Maui: Teacher & Naturalist, Engineer & Artist ©. This book will be released at a public celebration on Tuesday March 15th at Bailey House Museum, 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. For further information and directions to Bailey House Museum, call: 808 244-3326.

Edward Bailey’s significance for Maui can hardly be underestimated — but has been ignored. His detailed paintings of Maui in the 19th Century have charmed visitors to the Bailey House Museum, and Ka`ahumanu Church blesses Wailuku’s High Street; but his specimens of island plants at the Bishop Museum, the roads he laid out, and his role in the education of Hawaiian women are hardly known.

Drawing heavily on letters and journals of the Baileys and their circle, Decker presents Edward and Caroline largely in their own words and those of their friends and neighbors. Detailed and vivid, Bailey’s words draw us into the world he helped shape, and share his hopes and his misgivings about those changes.

Other than his obituary, this biography is the first story to be written of the life of this humble, versatile, charming man.
