BAILEY HOUSE MUSEUM
STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
RECEIVES FUNDING from A&B FOUNDATION
“Educating youth about the past – for the future” is a paid work-study program for high school students at Bailey House Museum. Named after a past trustee of the Maui Historical Society the program is called “The Alexa Kahui High School Internship."
For 2010 the program is made possible through a $3,500 grant from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation. This position will cover one intern for a 12-month period. Rick Volner Jr., HC&S Senior VP of Farming Operations, presented the check to Maui Historical Society Executive Director Nicole McMullen at their January 27 board meeting.
The program was developed to provide high school students with a program that would teach general office and customer service skills, and create an interest in preserving the history of Maui for future generations. Interns work in the Museum, Museum Shop, grounds, office, or on special projects. This position requires a commitment of six hours a week during the school year and twenty hours a week during school breaks.
Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum
Receives $10,000 grant from Hawaii Community Foundation
for museum software
The Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum has received a $10,000 Organizational Capacity Building Program grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation. This grant along with donations by the Rotary Club of Maui and former Trustee Zadoc Brown Jr. has allowed Maui Historical Society to purchase a new computer and Past Perfect Museum Software.
Digitizing the collections using this museum software will significantly increase Maui Historical Society’s ability to serve the public. This technology upgrade will improve the research capacity of the Society by centralizing records, improving efficiency, and making document, photograph and artifact collections easier to search and more accessible. We hope that these improvements will lead to increased use of the Archival Resource Center by the public. This project will directly benefit students, authors, researchers, historians, and the media, as well as museum staff, and ultimately, all the people of Maui.
The Archival Resource Center at the Bailey House preserves and makes available for research a library of published materials and an archive, which included maps, manuscripts, genealogies, biographies, and the documents of various organizations and businesses, as well as a photo collection of over 8,000 historic Maui photographs. Research hours are by appointment Monday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Please call 244-3326 to make an appointment.

The Maui Historical Society/Bailey House Museum has received $63,736.84 from The Harriet Baldwin Kokua Charitable Trust. The donation was presented to the Society by Trust representatives Janet Baldwin and Melinda Neuwirth. Harriet “Haku” Baldwin was a supporter and frequent visitor to Bailey House. She was born in 1913 in Honolulu and moved to Maui after she married Richard “Manduke” Baldwin. They had three children. Very active in the Maui community, Haku passed away in 2003, leaving the Trust to fund her favorite causes: Hawai`i, children, and animals. Executive Director Nicole McMullen said that the staff, volunteers and trustees of the Maui Historical Society were very grateful for the contribution and that the generosity of people in our community helps non-profits survive.
