STARRATT (later HALL), ORPAH ALICE (1889- ), DIARY, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND RELATED PAPERS, 1913 [materials span 1908-1996]. 6 folders.

Orpah Starratt was born in August 1889 to Samuel Starratt (1866-1946) and Caroline Christine Steeves Starratt (ca 1870- ca 1942 or 1943). The family home was at 1728 Poki Street, Honolulu. Samuel Starratt was a civil engineer and civilian employee of the U.S. Navy, who worked in the construction and development of Pearl Harbor. Other family members included a brother, Harold, and sister, Lillian.

In 1906, the noted inventor Thomas A. Edison sent motion picture camera man and photographer Robert K. Bonine (1862-1923) to Hawaii. He returned in 1908 and continued to make movies. Bonine later operated a photography studio and The Bonine, a movie theater. In 1913, Bonine decided to photograph Haleakala for an exhibit. He and a group of friends, including Orpah Starratt (nicknamed "Tootsie"), then a teacher at Central School, climbed Haleakala by horseback and mule train and camped in the crater from August 21 to September 1 en route to Hana. Others who accompanied the group were George Aiken, a doctor from Oahu; his wife, Irene Aiken; Gladys Van der Hoof ("Cook-lady"); Gertrude Turner ("String-bean"), Grace Arnold ("Mother"), Harold Starratt ("Old Bones"), Sandy Alec Rattray ("Dearie" and "Rosebud"), Tatsujiro Ogawa, Worth Aiken, Bertram Aiken, and Kawaha (or Kanaha). At the time the trip was understood to be the second trip by Caucasians to the crater; Harold Starratt apparently was a member of the party making the first such trip, in 1911.

The films taken by Bonine on the 1913 trip apparently were shown at the San Francisco World's Fair in 1915.

In 1915, Miss Starratt left Oahu to marry Albert Leander Hall in Chicago. Miss Starratt's parents remained in the family home in Honolulu. The Hall family later resided in Illinois. These materials were donated by Orpah Starratt's daughter, Elizabeth Brady, a professor retired from California State University at Northridge, and son, Albert L. Hall, Jr., Waukegan, Illinois.

The collection includes:

Folder 1- A folder with Miss Starratt's handwritten diary (a small pocket book) of the trip to Haleakala and several transcripts. The original diary also contains a few notes concerning the trip, a limerick, scores for card games, and a few Japanese words. Also included are a handwritten ink transcript of the trip to Haleakala (incomplete), a typewritten transcript of the trip (with annotations) entitled "Haleakala (House of the Sun) in 1913", a list of travelers, a printed version of the diary (with photographs) printed in the Maui Historical Society "Journal" in Winter 1999, two photographs, copies of an exchange of correspondence in 1975 between Elizabeth Brady and Iris M. Wiley, University Press of Hawaii concerning the possibility of publishing the diary, and a newspaper clipping. The original typescript transcription probably was made by Elizabeth Brady. Accession number 1998.022.001

Folder 2- A folder with a photocopy of a typewritten transcript of the diary, with a copy of a letter to Mrs. Albert L. Hall, 1946, acknowledging her gift of books for the Library of Hawaii. Accession number 1997.073.001

Folder 3- A folder of a typewritten transcription of the diary, transcribed by Ken McClain, May 1996, with transcriber's notes and original notes, additional notes and questions (of transcriber?), and a map of the route followed on the trip. Accession number 1998.022.001

Folder 4- A folder entitled "The 'Movies' in and Around Haleakala", 1913, which is a typewritten manuscript, dated September 1913, retelling the story of the trip to Haleakala. Accession number 1998.022.001

Folder 5- A folder entitled "Other Materials", consisting of a map and guide of the Island of Maui, issued by the Hawaii Promotion Committee in 1908, an article entitled "Tramping Through a Volcano", by George B. Thayer, from "The Mid-Pacific Magazine", March 1913; "The Mid-Pacific Magazine" 'Trail and Mountain Club Supplement', ca. 1915; two pages of poetry dated February 1914; an article; and miscellaneous notes. Many of these items are fragile. Accession number 1998.022.001

Folder 6- A photograph album, covered in tapa, including mainly black and white mounted photos of Miss Starratt's Haleakala trip, as well as photos of her family and friends, and buildings and people in Hawai'i and Illinois. Some of the photographs are identified and dated; the latest date is 1918. The photo album is fragile and should be handled with care.

For more information on the history of photography in Hawaii, researchers should contact the Bishop Museum Photo Archives, or Prof. Lynn Davis at the University of Hawaii-Manoa (whose comments were incorporated into this finding aid, with thanks). Other information was provided by Ms. Brady.

CONTE, PATTY J., “O KA MEA KA PAIKO O KAHIKINUI? WHICH IS THE PICO OF KAHIKINUI? A PRIMARILY ETHNOHISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE,” December 1998. 1 folder.

This small collection consists of Ms. Conte's Master of Arts thesis submitted to the Department of Anthropology at Northen Illinois University in December 1998. This near-print copy is signed by the author.

The subject of the thesis is:

"an in-depth examination of a previously undisputed, long-held oral history surrounding a well-known 19th- century habitation site along the south coast of the island of Maui, Hawai'i. More specifically, it presents data and results from a detailed ethnohistorical, architectural, and archaeological investigation of Kahikinui House (State Inventory of Historic Places Number 50-50-15-1536), located in Kahikinui District, Maui, Hawai'i."

The prevailing history associated with the site is that the house was built by a shipwrecked Portuguese sailor named Antone Pico from the wood of the wrecked ship and that this person also married a woman of royal lineage from the area.

The author retains copyright to her thesis. Anyone wishing to have copies of or from this thesis should consult the Executive Director of the Maui Historical Society in advance.
