This is the story of the land, land at the mouth of a great valley.

It is the story of the great and powerful Hawaiians who for centuries ruled here in such peace and prosperity that all the chants speak of the island as Royal Maui, who valued the water, the soil, the sunlight, and the ocean, the great valley and its spirits, mana of the great navigators and kings buried there, the creative energies of its earth.

It is the story of missionaries, who dreamed of a world in harmony with the Divine Being, who gave their lifework, their skills, knowledge and energy, and often their health and their families, so that the lives of the people of these islands would be healthier, more fruitful, safer from the threats of selfish nations, greedy people, and the Devil himself.

It is the story of a school where young Hawaiian women received an education better than young women of America were being given.

It is the story of one man who lived here for half a century, who came to teach Hawaiians many things they would need to know as the world around them changed beyond recognition who found himself struggling to feed his family and to keep on making life better for the people of Hawaii.

It is the story of the Society which today takes care of the land and the old house and the beautiful things that tell the story of this island and all who have lived here.

1790                Kamehameha conquers Maui

Wailuku Female Seminary

1832                Wailuku Mission established    

1837                Seminary opens under Rev. Green

1842                Bailey becomes head of Seminary

1849                Seminary closed by ABCFM

Edward Bailey

1814                birth in Holden, Massachusetts

1836                marries Caroline Hubbard, sails for Hawai’i as ABCFM teacher

1837                assigned to Big Island: Kohala

1840                at Lahainaluna

1841                assigned to Wailuku Mission

1842-1849       head of Wailuku Female Seminary

1850s               surveying for Dept of the Interior; some teaching; buys land

1865                founds E. Bailey & Sons Sugar Plantation, begins painting in oils

1866                lawsuits over water begin

1870                sells land & mill to his sons

1880                sons sell land & mill to Wailuku Sugar Co.

1888                Edward & Caroline Bailey move to California

1903                death of Edward Bailey

Maui Historical Society

1957                opens Hale Ho’ike'ike (House of Display)  in Old Bailey House

1974                renovates Bailey House

1990                Wailuku Sugar Co. sells property

1992                Masaru "Pundy" & Shirley Yokouchi give Bailey House & its land to MHS
