It is the story of the great and powerful Hawaiians who for centuries ruled here in such peace and prosperity that all the chants speak of the island as Royal Maui, who valued the water, the soil, the sunlight, and the ocean, the great valley and its spirits, mana of the great navigators and kings buried there, the creative energies of its earth. It is the story of missionaries, who dreamed of a world in harmony with the Divine Being, who gave their lifework, their skills, knowledge and energy, and often their health and their families, so that the lives of the people of these islands would be healthier, more fruitful, safer from the threats of selfish nations, greedy people, and the Devil himself. It is the story of a school where young Hawaiian women received an education better than young women of America were being given. It is the story of one man who lived here for half a century, who came to teach Hawaiians many things they would need to know as the world around them changed beyond recognition who found himself struggling to feed his family and to keep on making life better for the people of Hawaii. It is the story of the Society which today takes care of the land and the old house and the beautiful things that tell the story of this island and all who have lived here.
